The Joinery

The Goal

To develop The Joinery’s 60-seat setting in a historic mill building while meeting all building codes and featuring the original mill architecture, custom woodworking, lighting and other special characteristics.

“The Joinery is a game-changer to the dining scene on the west side of Great Bay. The design and build-out created an atmosphere that is informal and sophisticated at the same time. The contrast of textures and architectural details lends a romantic drama and complexity to the space. On any given night, find a UNH professor seated next to a pierced and bearded 20-something comparing the latest local craft beer, seasonally inspired cocktail or locally caught fish that has been added to the menu.” 

Our Approach

The Chinburg Team needed to maximize the space for The Joinery’s restaurant and bar while also performing a retrofit for the necessary ventilation, electrical and drainage systems. It was also crucial to create an ambiance of a contemporary, casual eating experience. The result included design elements that highlighted the mill’s history and supported a farm-to-table message through rustic details.
